Watch Vampire Academy Online If you’ve ever wanted to know what it feels like to have some kind of severe brain injury that leaves you incapable of understanding simple concepts, Vampire Academy is the film for you. Somehow it manages to combine a set-up so amazingly basic it could be taught to mice with the story-telling approach of a sugar-crazed nine year-old trying to tell you about the Franco-Prussian War based on something they think they overheard while behind chased through a university history department by a bear. Put another way, there’s about seven hours of story here packed into a hundred minutes and trying to follow it all will make your head explode.

Our story begins with a happy vampire family being killed in a car crash. No wait, that was a flashback: teen vampire Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry) just had a bad dream about the death of her family and her psychically-linked human guardian Rose Hathaway (Zoey Dutch) picked up on it. They’re currently on the run from St Vladimir’s, AKA Vampire Academy, for reasons unknown, and by “reasons unknown” I mean the film never actually explains why they’re on the run (we find out who sent them into hiding, but why they did it? Never explained). Not that it matters because they’re promptly recaptured and shipped back to school, so forget the last five minutes even happened.

Watch Vampire Academy Online Backstory time: it seems there are three kinds of vampires in the world. A Dhampir (eg, Rose) is a half-human, half-vampire charged with protecting the Moroi (eg Lissa), full-blooded vampires who can survive in sunlight, only drink blood from willing (and usually Twilight fan-fiction writing) humans, and have a variety of element-themed magical powers – control over earth, water, fire or air. The film never finds time to explain that it’s really important for a Moroi to “declare” what kind of magic they’re going to specialise in, but as Lissa (who’s equally good at two or three kinds at least) increasingly freaks out as the film goes on due to not declaring, it seems to be important.

Pretty really, this system likes the picture of a few customers mechanically, it logs into your account and logs on. Of the path, no longer everything is so rosy in practice. More backstory: The third kind of vampire – the Strigoi – can’t go out in daylight, feel nothing and kill for fun, and occasionally attack the Academy for reasons that – again – aren’t really explained. Also, Lissa is a vampire princess who, due to some combination of a complicated system of governance, her dead family and a sick uncle (Gabriel Byrne) being not up to the task, could be next in line to the throne.

Meanwhile Rose’s mum is a super badass Strigoi hunter who only communicates with her daughter through curt and generally disapproving telegrams from around the world, Moroi biting Dhampir is generally seen as some kind of sex thing, and using the word “vampire” is considered to be in bad taste. Let the story begin!

Once Rose and Lissa are back at school it seems like this is going to settle down into a fun high school parody, with bitchy cliques, rumour-mongering, classes that all take place at night and “the obligatory cafeteria scene” that involves the students feeding on human volunteers. Instead, we get a high school yearbook full of characters thrown at us who’re barely sketched in but who all seem to have some vital role to play.

Watch Vampire Academy Online There’s the hunk Lissa used to date, the hunk she now wants to date, the bitchy new girlfriend of the former hunk, a couple of handsome frat-boy types lurking around Rose, a slightly nerdy “nice guy” who is friends with Rose but is too quick to believe the sleazy rumours spread by the frat boys, not to mention Rose’s fighting tutor Dimitri (Danila Kozlovsky), who quickly becomes her would-be love interest. Which is lucky because he’s pretty much the only one of these guys who stands out even though his performance is just as wooden as all the other students.

It’s standard protocol these days when adapting a successful YA franchise, to stick as close to the book as possible. But despite an all star team behind the camera (from the director of Mean Girls and the writer of Heathers) this is probably the first occasion where the film is literally impossible to understand without reading the novel first. Scene after scene seems straightforward, only to be utterly confusing the second you actually think about what you're seeing. The plot does eventually make a kind of sense, but so much is skimmed over it's likely you'll have given up trying to follow it long before the shock twists start piling up.

Making things even worse: dream sequences! This is the kind of film where a major character can have her leg broken on camera in one scene, be perfectly OK in the next and there’s no explanation as to whether she just imagined it or was healed by magic the second it happened, because both are equally likely. Until some bad guy explains it all in a climactic monologue that ends with them tossing away a cane like they were a Broadway hoofer.

The cornball romance stuff is especially cornball – bonus points for the line “all the reasons you have for not loving me only make me love you more” – but this also amps up the sexy by having Lissa stay alive when they’re on the run by feeding on Rose, which is the vampire equivalent of girl-on-girl experimentation. A fun performance from Dutch as the wise-cracking Rose helps a lot too: whenever things get too confusing story-wise, just focus on her and she’ll get you out safe.

There’s one scene that makes this mess of a film worth watching: at one stage a character barges into the room of another character to get help for a rescue mission, but unbenkownst to the duo, one of them has been given a love charm that will make the two of them start making out like maniacs the second they’re together. So they promptly start clawing at each other, and not only does the guy all but tear the dress off the girl, he then throws it in a fire because hey, it’s not like she’ll be needing clothes ever again. This is the best scene in the history of film; shame the film it appears in is such a mess.

What do you get if you combine elements of Twilight, Harry Potter, and Gossip Girl with lashings of black comedy and kink? The answer, apparently, is Vampire Academy, one of the oddest attempts yet to jump on the 'young adult' fantasy bandwagon.

Here Rose spends much of her time training to serve as Lissa's bodyguard; she also secretly allows her mistress to drink from her veins, a ritual of submission portrayed in an uncritically glamorous light. This is what you might call queer text, rather than queer subtext, even if both characters are interested in boys as well. In the context of a film aimed at teenagers, there's something undeniably provocative, not to say unsettling, about the mix of sexual innuendo and a celebration of hierarchy.

Vampire Academy marks the first collaboration between Mean Girls director Mark Waters and his brother, the writer Daniel Waters, whose screenplay for the 1988 film Heathers prefigured the snarky tone of pop culture in the 1990s and beyond. Sadly, neither brother is on form here. The script is quippy and self-conscious but seldom rises to actual wit.
